Our absolute favorite part of San Francisco, of course, was seeing the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s so iconic, and seeing it in person did not disappoint.

You can also get a good look at the bridge on the southern end.
1. Presidio and the Golden Gate Promenade.
There are a ton of things to do here. You can rent bikes, fish, sunbathe, stick your toes in the bay (brr!), etc. The promenade is beautiful and includes a long, coastside walk, great (free) parking (at least on a Wednesday when we went) and lots of open space for your kids/dog to run.
You also have a pretty good view of Alcatraz on the beach as well.
2. Fort Point
At the western tip of the promenade, right underneath the southern end of the Golden Gate bridge is Fort Point, a key outpost in the Civil War. It’s pretty large, and you can walk through and get a sense of what life was like for the soldiers. The best part? It’s free!
The fort offers an educational movie of both Fort Point as well as the Golden Gate Bridge. It also has a gift shop.
